The Hollandsche Schouwburg was officially recognized as a
historic building in 1962. A few years later, the residents of the
Plantage-Weesper neighbourhood decided to organize an annual event
there for National Remembrance Day, 4 May. The ceremony in the
Hollandsche Schouwburg on 4 May is mainly intended for and
organized by people who live nearby. For instance, the victims of
Nazi terror will be commemorated by a guest speaker and by students
at what is now the IVKO School, who will read poems. The school was
located at Plantage Middenlaan 27 until 2011 and was once a teacher
training school through which many Jewish children escaped the
German-run crèche.

In view of the history of this site, the ceremony normally includes
several Jewish elements, such as the Yizkor (Jewish memorial
prayer) and the Kaddish. At 20.00, two minutes of silence will be
observed, after which the ceremony will close with the Dutch
national anthem.

Programme for 4 May 2013
Starting time: 19.30

Music: Eric Vaarzon Morel, flamenco guitarist, plays
Sefardim

Speech by Marja Vuijsje, journalist and author of the book Ons
Kamp. Een min of meer Joodse geschiedenis ('Our Camp: A more or
less Jewish history')

Jedinja Michelson, student at the IVKO School, reads her poem
aloud

Music: Eric Vaarzon Morel, flamenco guitarist, plays
Fandanguito

20.00: Two minutes of silence

National anthem

Wreath-laying by representatives of the Jewish Police
Network

Flower-laying by the memorial

Because the ceremony will take place on Shabbat, Yizkor and
Kaddish will not be recited this year.

When the Holocaust is mentioned, most people recall images of
tattooed numbers on forearms, footage of children in striped
uniforms in Auschwitz or Hitler's speeches. Dispelling our notions
of a "Holocaust documentary", Forgotten Transports have none of
that. Based on 400 hours of interviews recorded in twenty countries
on five continents and ten years of work, each of the four films
describes one destination of Nazi transports and one unique "mode
of survival" in extreme conditions - told, for the first time, by
Czech and Central European Jews deported to unknown ghettos and
camps in Latvia, Belarus, Estonia and Poland. (Source: <a

The series has won numerous awards at film festivals, including
the Czech Lion Academy Award for best documentary. All four films
will be shown in the Netherlands for the first time as part
of Holocaust Memorial Week 2013.
schoolchildren in the Hollandsche Schouwburg. Elementary
schoolchildren, who have prepared for the occasion with lessons at
school and a visit to the monument, talk about what the Hollandsche
Schouwburg means today, about the purpose of remembrance and how
important it is to remember the persecution of the Jews during
World War II in today's multi-ethnic society.
More information about the remembrance will be announced on this

established as a national memorial centre in 1962. A few years
later, residents in the Plantage-Weesperdistrict decided to hold
the annual memorial service in the theatre on Remembrance Day - 4
May in the Netherlands. The ceremony held in the Hollandsche
Schouwburg on 4 May is especially planned for and organized by
those from the immediate neighbourhood. School students from the
nearby IVKO School at 27 Plantage Middenlaan (a former teacher
training college attached to the day care centre from which many
Jewish children were helped to escape) recite poems; a guest
speaker recalls the Naziterror and those who were murdered. Each
year at eight o'clock in the evening two minutes silence are
observed nationwide. The remembrance ceremony closes with the
singing of the Dutch national anthem.
