Theatre 1892-1943

Cornelis Antonius (1857-1917) designed the Hollandsche Schouwburg (Dutch Theatre). The building was put into use as the Artis Schouwburg (Artis Theatre) on May 5th of 1892. After only two years, the building continued as Hollandsche Schouwburg (Dutch Theatre). Because of its central location within the Jewish community, the theatre attracted many Jewish visitors. After 40 years of extensive use, in 1930 the main interior of the theatre underwent a profound renovation based on the designs of Wolter Bakker.
